The researchers ran an experiment similar to those "spot the differences" tests from childhood. They trained mice to focus on a target right in front of them while ignoring distractions off to the side. The mice picked it up and performed well.
Then came the interesting part: the researchers temporarily shut down those brainstem neurons.
"Once we inactivated these neurons, the mice went haywire," Kothari explained. They lost the ability to filter out distractions — even weak, irrelevant ones.
Sound familiar? It probably should. The research team says this mirrors what happens with ADHD.
What This Means for ADHD and Autism
Neuroscientist Shreesh Mysore, the study's senior author, put it plainly: "One key feature of ADHD is that even faint distractions pull attention away — and that's exactly what we observed when these neurons were silenced."
But here's the hopeful part: when those neurons were switched back on, the mice instantly got their filtering ability back. The system could be restored.
This finding opens some fascinating doors. If these neurons exist in humans (all evidence points to yes), and if they work the same way, scientists might develop more targeted treatments for attention disorders. Instead of broadly affecting the whole brain, future medications could potentially hit this specific "attentional selection engine."
The team is especially curious about whether these neurons behave differently in people with ADHD or autism. That could explain why some brains struggle with selective attention — and point toward more precise ways to help.
