When the Water Just... Disappears
Let me paint you a picture. Imagine looking out at what should be a lake — one of Arizona's largest reservoirs — and seeing more mudflats and dried earth than water. That's exactly what's happening right now at San Carlos Reservoir, and it's both fascinating and deeply troubling.
The Gila River, which feeds this reservoir, has been basically starving. The winter snowpack in the mountains of New Mexico? Just 2% of what it should be. Two percent, people. That's not a drought, that's a water emergency wearing a drought costume.
The Numbers Are Staggering
Here's what really got me when I was reading about this situation. In a normal year, spring runoff from mountain snow feeds rivers and replenishes reservoirs. But this year? By April, the river was flowing at only 39% of normal levels. By June, the reservoir held less than 400 acre-feet of water.
Let me put that in perspective for you. An acre-foot is basically one acre of land covered in one foot of water — enough water for a few households for a year. So we're talking about a reservoir that can hold hundreds of thousands of acre-feet when full, now holding less than 400. It's like comparing a swimming pool to a couple of bathtubs.
Satellite images tell the story even more dramatically. In 2023, the reservoir sat at about 60% capacity — still impressive, still functional. Fast forward to May 2026, and it's less than 1% full. You can literally see the "bathtub ring" of mineral deposits left behind as the waterline receded.
The Fish Didn't Stand a Chance
As water levels dropped, something heartbreaking happened underwater. Less water means less oxygen, and fish need oxygen just like we do. Eventually, the reservoir became suffocating — literally.
Virtually all the fish died. We're talking largemouth bass, catfish, crappie, bluegill, even stocked trout. A whole ecosystem, collapsed in a matter of weeks.
The recreation department had to close the reservoir and actually warn people about health risks from decomposing fish. That's a sentence I never thought I'd write. "Warning: Don't go near the dead fish."
This Has Happened Before — Way Too Many Times
Here's something that blew my mind: San Carlos Reservoir has gone completely dry at least 20 times since it was first filled in 1930. Twenty times! That Coolidge Dam was dedicated in 1930, and supposedly Will Rogers himself joked to President Coolidge that "if that was my lake, I'd mow it."
They've dealt with massive fish kills before, too. In 1976, over 5 million fish died, and it took five years for the ecosystem to bounce back. Five years. And that was just one event in a long history of boom-and-bust cycles.
Is There Hope?
Okay, I don't want to end this on a completely gloom-and-doom note. The Southwest is notoriously variable when it comes to rainfall. The same region experiencing severe drought right now could get dumped on by an unusually wet monsoon season.
NOAA is actually predicting a 33 to 50 percent chance of above-average summer rainfall, and El Niño conditions are strengthening in the Pacific — a pattern that sometimes brings heavier rains to the Southwest.
So while this reservoir might look like a gonner right now, it could start filling again with the right storms. It's happened before. It'll probably happen again.
What This Tells Us
But honestly? This whole situation is a wake-up call about water in the American West. We're not just talking about a lake that's inconveniently low. We're talking about water that communities depend on, that farmers use to grow food, that wildlife calls home.
The Gila River connects snowy mountains in New Mexico to desert communities in Arizona — it's a lifeline through some of the driest terrain in the country. When that lifeline frays, everything downstream feels it.
I've been thinking about those satellite images a lot. Same reservoir, same place, completely different realities depending on the year. The 2023 version looked healthy, almost full. The 2026 version looks like a scar on the desert floor.
Climate variability isn't new in the Southwest. But as patterns shift and extremes become more common, moments like this might become more frequent — and more severe.
For now, I'm hoping for rain. But I'm also hoping we start taking water conservation a lot more seriously, because that reservoir isn't just a lake. It's a lesson we're apparently determined to keep relearning.
