They've identified three extinct species belonging to an entirely new order of marsupials called Keeunamorphia. But these small, broken pieces told an enormous story. The teeth had some unusual features—specifically an odd cusp on the primary crest that no other known marsupial had. And when Churchill compared thirteen different aspects of these teeth to other species, they matched each other perfectly but didn't match anything else in the marsupial world.

What does this mean? Well, it looks like Keeunamorphia represents an extremely ancient lineage. Churchill believes these creatures might be some of the very first Australian marsupials, with roots stretching back to when the supercontinent Gondwana was breaking apart more than 55 million years ago. If he's right, Keeunamorphia could be both the oldest AND longest-lived marsupial lineage ever discovered—surviving for over 35 million years before eventually fading away during the Middle Miocene.

But here's the really thought-provoking part: the researchers think they know why these creatures eventually disappeared. By the Miocene period, other marsupial groups like dasyuromorphians (meat-eaters) and other small carnivores had already filled those ecological niches. Keeunamorphians, being more primitive, simply couldn't compete anymore. Nature has no room for the outdated, even if you've been doing your thing successfully for millions of years.

And here's what keeps me up at night: there's a massive 20-million-year gap in the marsupial fossil record. Twenty million years of missing information. Which means there could be other entire lineages out there waiting to be discovered—branches of the tree of life we haven't even imagined yet.
