What If Consciousness Isn't Special? The Mind-Blowing Idea That Changes Everything

So here's something that's been rattling around my brain, and I think you'll enjoy it: What if consciousness isn't special? Not in a "nothing matters" kind of way, but in a genuinely hopeful, universe-is-maybe-way-more-alive-than-we-think kind of way.

A pair of philosophers recently dropped a paper that's equal parts fascinating and unsettling. Eric Schwitzgebel from UC Riverside and Jeremy Pober (now at the University of Lisbon) are arguing that consciousness might be way more common in the universe than we ever imagined—except maybe not in the little green men way we usually picture it.

The Copernican Connection

Let me take you back to 1514. A Polish astronomer named Nicolaus Copernicus looked up at the night sky and did some heavy math, eventually concluding something that was basically career suicide at the time: Earth isn't special. We're not the center of anything. We orbit the Sun like every other rock out there.

This was scandalous. I mean, the Church wasn't thrilled, for starters. But the deeper idea here is what got me: if Earth is just one planet among billions upon billions, then why should we assume Earth is the only place where something like consciousness could evolve?

Copernicus flipped our cosmic address from "VIP suite" to "apartment 4,734,892,103 in a building with infinite floors." It's humbling, honestly.

Here's Where It Gets Weird

Schwitzgebel and Pober picked up where Copernicus left off and asked a genuinely wild question: If consciousness can emerge in one substrate (our carbon-based biological stuff), could it emerge in other substrates too?

Think of "substrate" as the material something is made of. Your brain is a substrate. A computer chip is a substrate. A weird alien crystal could be a substrate.

The philosophers call the property of being able to exist in multiple substrates "substrate flexibility." Let me break this down with an analogy they use:

A cup—your basic coffee mug—can be made of ceramic, glass, metal, plastic, even a gourd if you're feeling rustic. Why? Because the target property of a cup is just "holds liquid." That's flexible. Anyone can do that with lots of materials.

But if your target property is "holds boiling water without melting," suddenly fewer substrates qualify. Get specific enough, and you narrow the possibilities dramatically.

So What Does This Mean for Consciousness?

Here's the million-dollar question: What is consciousness, really? Is it problem-solving? Self-awareness? The ability to dream? The philosophers don't claim to have the final answer—honestly, neither does anyone else. But using a framework that applies Copernican thinking to consciousness, they estimate that the observable universe probably contains "at least a thousand different behaviorally sophisticated species" made of diverse, unexpected substrates.

That's a lot of potential conscious beings we'd never recognize as conscious.

Maybe there's a gas giant where beings are made of swirling atmospheric patterns. Maybe there's silicon-based life forms somewhere processing existence in ways we can't even conceptualize. Maybe—and this is where my brain starts doing somersaults—consciousness is emerging right now in substrates we interact with daily but never consider as potential homes for minds.

The Uncomfortable Truth

Now, I want to be real with you. The authors readily admit this is speculative. We have exactly one example of consciousness: the life on Earth. Everything else is inference and imagination.

And here's what keeps me up at night: We can't even agree on what consciousness is among Earth scientists. How in the world would we recognize it in a completely alien form?

There's also the sobering possibility that Earth life really is unique—that whatever cosmic lottery produced minds here was a one-in-a-trillion fluke that happened exactly once.

But here's the thing that excites me: Even considering this possibility changes how we look at the universe. If consciousness isn't tied exclusively to carbon-based neural tissue, then we're not looking for "aliens who think like us." We're looking for minds we literally cannot imagine yet.

What Does This Mean for Us?

Honestly? I think this theory is a beautiful reminder of how small we are in the grand scheme of things—and how that smallness doesn't diminish us. It expands us.

If consciousness really does have substrate flexibility, then the universe isn't just full of rocks and gas and radiation. It's full of perspectives. Experiences. Maybe joys and sorrows we couldn't dream of.

Or maybe we're completely wrong and it's just us out here. But isn't it wonderful that smart people are asking the question at all?
