His team focused on a group called Myotis bats, which includes some species with absolutely bonkers lifespans. One little Brandt's myotis was actually recaptured 50 years after it was first banded. So what did Vazquez and his Berkeley team find when they sequenced the genomes of eight different Myotis species? The results, published in Nature, revealed something fascinating: the longest-lived bats have immune systems that are absolutely cranking.
Specifically, these Methuselahs of the bat world had way more genes associated with fighting cancer. That's huge, right? Because cancer is essentially what happens when damaged cells go rogue. The better your body is at either fixing those cells or telling them to self-destruct, the better your chances of staying healthy as you age.
But here's where it gets really interesting. The researchers found that genes involved in aging and genes involved in fighting disease overlap a lot. Which means the things that make bats so good at surviving infections might actually be the same things keeping them young. Science doesn't always give us such neat connections!

Think about that for a second. The bat's internal philosophy seems to be: "If this cell is too far gone, we're not going to waste resources trying to save it. Better to just pull the plug and move on."
