The Countries In the Worst Shape

The research identified several countries where the problem is most severe. Thailand, Bangladesh, Nigeria, Egypt, China, and Indonesia are all experiencing relative sea level rise between 7 to 10 millimeters per year when you factor in population density.

The United States, Netherlands, and Italy are also dealing with elevated rates, averaging around 4 to 5 millimeters annually.

Not All Doom and gloom Though

Now, I don't want to leave you feeling hopeless, because here's the genuinely encouraging part: we've actually figured out how to fix this in some places.

Tokyo is a perfect example. Back in the day, the city was sinking at over 10 centimeters per year — some areas even hit 24 centimeters annually! That's like watching your city disappear into the ground in real-time.

But here's what happened: the government took action. They developed alternative water supplies, regulated groundwater pumping, and the sinking rates dropped dramatically.

Houston's Harris-Galveston area faced a similar crisis. Excessive groundwater withdrawal was causing the land to sink, so they created a special district in 1975 to regulate water use, encourage conservation, and find alternative sources. It worked.
