Mice exposed to the live bacteria had the bacteria accumulate in their aortic valves. Over time, this led to increased calcium deposits and actual symptoms of aortic stenosis — the same condition humans get.

And when researchers genetically removed a specific inflammatory pathway (called IL-1β), the valve calcification and disease symptoms also decreased significantly, even when the bacteria were present.

What does this mean? It suggests that P. gingivalis triggers inflammation throughout the body, and that inflammation appears to be a key driver in how the valve becomes damaged.
